About This Event
DINNER AND CHILDCARE INCLUDED!
Date & Location:
It will be on Saturday Sep 23, from 4pm-8pm, at Massie Hall (not Massey Hall in Toronto 😂) which is a very cute rural community centre in Grey County, situated right next to the Bighead River on its namesake watershed, which flows north into the Georgian Bay through Meaford.
What's the event about?:
Community and eating together! This event is first and foremost an opportunity to get together, eat a tasty chicken dinner cooked by our resident tasty chicken dinner cooker Jason Hayes, toss all our kids in a pile (but this time with hired childcare!), and all those things that build and strengthen our mycelial bonds. But it's also an opportunity to put our minds and hearts and resources together and take a step (or prepare to take a leap) forward with how to share the land when land ownership has suddenly ceased to be a possibility for the next generation of farmers and homesteaders. This conversation has been happening organically in the farming community for awhile, and it's clear that many of us want to experiment with sharing our land with others. But it also brings up so many questions and issues, many of which get us stuck. The hope is to untangle some of those issues to make moving forward at least a step closer.
About the panel... which starts at 4pm SHARP!!!!!:
We've prepared a little panel consisting of Scott Taylor, who is the Director of PLANNING at Grey County (he can tell us what's actually legally possible in terms of sharing the land as a home); our near and dear friend Maddie Marmor who is so articulate on the needs of landless farmers and all things NFU; and me, Glynis - if my nerves don't get the better of me, that is. I've been researching and thinking hard on the historical and ideological origins of this thing we call "land ownership" that I hope might bring some clarity to how we got here, as it has to me, and all the little and big things we take for granted. Knowing me, some insights from philosophy, design, and Indigenous ways-of-knowing/being will also make some appearances and maybe provide some helpful ways to think through the practicalities of sharing the land.
But beyond the panellists, the community is more packed with knowledge than many of us are often aware. Get mingling! The answer to your question may be hiding in the minds and experiences of the people sitting right next to you.
The event is subsidized by our wonderful and awesome NFU local, but we still need to charge $10 (members) and $15 (non-members) per head to help pay for the delicious food and pre-sell the tickets so we can plan and cook accordingly!
Did I mention there's children's activities?! Thanks to nearby Hundred Acre Woods Forest School!
Get your tickets here! https://sharingtheland.eventbrite.ca
FYI Massie Hall has a capacity of only 65 people, so if we sell out before you get your ticket, we won't be able to squeeze you in! Ack!
